Baseball Drops First Spring Break Game to Manchester

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Eastern Baseball began its Spring Break trip on Monday morning with a 4-2 loss to a solid Manchester squad. Eastern held a 2-0 advantage after the first three innings of play, but the Spartans scored single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth frames to secure the comeback triumph. Matt McHale led the Eastern offense with three hits, a double, one run scored, and an RBI.

After a scoreless first two-and-a-half innings, Eastern (0-3) struck first in the bottom of the third. Brock Langlotz began the rally with a triple, his first-career three-bagger, to deep right field, and McHale's first RBI of the year, a double to left field, put the Eagles ahead 1-0. McHale later scored on a wild pitch to put Eastern ahead 2-0.

Manchester (2-1) rallied back to tie the contest at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Spartans scored on a passed ball in the fourth, before knotting it up with a sacrifice fly from Aidan Stevens in the fifth. Eastern had a runner on second with no outs and runners at the corners with two outs, but could not capitalize.

A one-out double and a hit by pitch put runners on first and second for the Spartans with one out. Manchester capitalized with an RBI single from Vian Mariani to take the lead for good. Mariani knocked in his second run of the game in the eighth to put Manchester up 4-2.

Eastern put their first two men on base in the bottom of the eighth after Connor Schilling was hit by a pitch and Sean Cottrell singled. However, Eastern was again unable to take advantage as Manchester recorded three straight outs to end the scoring threat.

Along with McHale's three knocks, Schilling, Cottrell, Langlotz, and Garrett Friend all finished with hits for the Eagles. First-year pitcher John Westfield put together a solid collegiate debut on the bump, allowing five hits and two earned runs with a pair of strikeouts.

Eastern continues its Spring Break games tomorrow at the Cal Ripken Experience. The Eagles begin the day against Neumann at 11:00 am, followed by Cabrini at 2:30 pm.
