GLASSBORO, N.J. - Eastern Women's Basketball battled valiantly in a Saturday afternoon clash at Rowan, but ultimately dropped a 63-50 decision to the Profs at Esby Gym. Rowan used a 13-6 run from the middle of the second quarter to the early stages of the third quarter to build a lead it would not relinquish.
Three Eagles finished with double figures in the contest, led by
Wynter Bess' 18. The graduate forward from Philadelphia knocked down eight of her 12 field goal attempts and two of three from beyond the arc to go along with five rebounds. Sophomore guard
Jeriyah Johnson scored 11 points on four made field goals, while junior forward
Taryn Woodson recorded her first double-double of the campaign with 10 points and 11 boards.
In a back-and-forth first quarter, the two teams traded baskets, with neither team leading by more than four points. After an early 6-2 Rowan advantage, a triple from Bess and a layup from Woodson in the paint put the Eagles ahead 7-6 at the 5:57 mark. Another layup from Woodson and a second triple from Bess put the Eagles in front 11-8 at the 3:54 mark, and a basket from
Miranda Liebtag, together with two made free throws from
Jakaylah Holland made it a 15-14 Eagles' advantage at the first quarter break.
Eastern and Rowan continued to trade points in the second quarter. But after Bess' layup with 4:12 remaining in the first half made it 26-24 in favor of Rowan, the Eastern offense went cold, scoring just six points over the next 7:33 of play.
The Eagles pushed back, trimming the Rowan advantage to six on five straight points from Johnson, but they would not get any closer. The Profs scored 16 points int the fourth to secure an eventual 13-point triumph.
Eastern shot 21-of-59 (35.6 percent) from the field and three-of-14 from beyond the arc. Conversely, the Profs shot 26-of-58 from the field (44.8 percent) and three-of-15 from distance. Rowan won the battle on the glass, 40-34, and finished with 12 steals compared to Eastern's nine.
Eastern (0-3) concludes its four-game road trip to start the season on Wednesday at Immaculata. The contest is set to begin at 12 noon.
