Women's Basketball Falls in Defensive Battle

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Heading into the fourth quarter, Eastern University Women's Basketball needed to find defensive stops and find ways to score to cut into the host Immaculata University Mighty Macs' nine-point lead. The Eagles held Immaculata to 2-of-12 shooting in the frame, and carved into the lead, but the hosts made 11-of-12 from the line in the final moments to hold off the Eastern rally. Immaculata held on for a 57-48 win in a closely contested defensive struggle. Taryn Woodson scored 20 points and added 11 rebounds to lead the Eagles.

In the fourth, the Eagles picked up stops early and cut into the lead on three baskets from Miranda Liebtag. The senior forward had a pair of long two-pointers and a 3-pointer to pull the Eagles within five at 44-39. Liebtag finished the game with 11 points

The Mighty Macs (2-4)  scored their final field goal with 5:08 on the clock to bump the lead back to seven, but Woodson answered with a tough inside basket to close the gap back to five with four minutes to play. With the Mighty Macs getting to the line, the Eagles were never able to get closer. Immaculata went 17-for-20 from the line int he game, the Eagles were only 4-for-7 for the game.

Neither team had an open look at the basket in the opening period. Both teams made three two-point baskets over the first ten minutes, but the Mighty Macs made 3-of-4 from the line for a 9-6 lead.

The Eagles were within a point at 20-19 late in the second, but Morgan Falcone hit a late 3-pointer to send the Mighty Macs to intermission with a four-point lead. Woodson scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting in the second quarter.

Immaculata made 8-of-15 from the floor in the third quarter to open up the nine-point lead.

The Eagles (0-4) will play their home opener against Neumann on Monday night.
