ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– As weather conditions deteriorated through the game, Eastern University Women's Soccer earned a 3-1 MAC Commonwealth win over the visiting Alvernia University Golden Wolves.
Paige Snell and
Madelyn Mullen each scored in the first half and Mullen put the Eagles up 3-0 early in the second half.
Throughout the latter half of the week, Eastern (2-4-4, 1-0-1) spent significant time in training on preventing and earning corner kicks. The Eagles had given up a pair of goals on corners in their 2-2 tie at Penn State Harrisburg. Head Coach
Jess Shanahan wanted her wide players to work to create chances with crosses in the run of play or at least earn corner kick chances.
In the eleventh minute,
Sydney Koncsol applied her training well with a strong run off the left side. When the Alvernia defender stopped her progress, the senior winger bounced the ball off the defenders shiner a corner.
Olivia Nicholson came forward and served in a beautiful ball from the left corner. Snell beat her mark and the Alvernia goalkeeper to the ball and headed home her first tally of the year.
As the wind picked up late in the first half, the Eagles earned another corner, their fourth of the half, when Paige Giannettino popped a ball off the ankle of an Alvernia defender deep in the right corner. The Golden Wolves had the initial clear, but
Ella Sedor won the race to the ball and provided a quality ball into the middle from the opposite side. Mullen stopped to the ball and slotted home her second of the year.
The Eagles had an 8-3 edge in first-half shots and a 4-0 edge in corners.
The Eagles earned their first corner of the second half as the rain started to come down. Nicholson's serve is the 53rd minute found Mullen ten yards out. Mullen jumped over her mark and powered home a header for the 3-0 lead.
Though the Golden Wolves applied pressure the rest of the way, but the Eagles had plenty of chances in the counter. Learning from their experience midweek, the Eagles defended all five second-half corners in front of first-year goalkeeper
Faith Leake.
The Golden Wolves (1-9-2, 0-1-1) got their goal on a 76th minute penalty kick.
Eastern will host Lancaster Bible on Tuesday and will return to league action with a noon test against Messiah University next Saturday.
