CHESTER, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey stayed within striking distance for the entire match, but the Eagles dropped a 1-0 decision to MAC Commonwealth foe Widener. The host Pride scored the only goal of the matching the 22nd minute.
The Eagles (6-10, 1-5) were pinned in for much of the opening quarter, but the penalty corner defense unit played well and
Abby Agapito made three big stops to keep the score level. Even with much of the action in their own end, the Eagles were able to create a transition chance in the 14th minute.
Abby Hakes earned a penalty corner on the break. The host Pride defended the chance and the first quarter ended without a goal.
The second quarter moved into the midfield, and the Eagles had several forays into the Widener circle. The Pride (7-9, 3-3) found their goal in a transition chance following one of Eastern's attacking moments.
Both teams had one penalty corner in the second quarter.
The Eastern defense made a stunning stand midway through the third quarter. Agapito made a sprawling save and
Grace Wise blocked multiple shots from close range. Out of that defensive effort, the Eagles got their best offensive chance of the match. They earned back-to-back corners int he 43rd minute. On both, they pushed the ball into dangerous space in front of the goal but were unable to convert those opportunities into shots.
A Widener yellow card in the fourth quarter gave the Eagles a chance to play up a player. They earned a fifth penalty corner, but again were unable to break through.
Agapito finished with six saves.
The Eagles will close out their season with a Senior Day game against Albright this Saturday at 11 am.
