Women's Soccer Falls to Cabrini in Eagle Road Tilt

RADNOR, Pa. - Over the course of 90 minutes at Edith Robb Dixon Field, Eastern Women's Soccer put forth a strong effort against Eagle Road rival Cabrini. However, despite a multitude of chances, the Eagles were kept off the scoreboard for the third consecutive match in a 1-0 loss to the Cavaliers. It is the third consecutive 1-0 loss for Eastern to start the 2022 season.

After both teams traded possession over the first 14 minutes, excellent ball movement by Cabrini and a subsequent Eastern foul set up a free kick opportunity from just outside the box. Cabrini's Rebekah Cunningham fired a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Cavaliers a one-goal lead.

Eastern created a near-brilliant chance to tie the contest at one on a tremendous pass from junior defender Jenna Linstra up the seam, but the Eagles were called offside. First-year midfielder Emma Bennett recorded Eastern's first shot of the night off a great setup from Madelyn Mullen at the 18:50 mark of the first half, but the chance was saved.

First-year goalkeeper Brooke Moskey continued her strong start to the season with a brilliant save during an action-packed sequence in the 33rd minute. After two Cabrini shots went off the post, the Kennett Square, Pa. made a point-blank stop right in front of the cage to keep the match within one goal.

The Eagles recorded two more excellent scoring chances in the final 10 minutes but could not find the equalizer. A free kick by sophomore defender Olivia Nicholson was saved by Cabrini goalkeeper Caroline Hassell, before a strong chance by Lindsay Kline sailed just wide right at the 4:20 mark.

Eastern had several more scoring opportunities in the second half, but could not find the back of the net. A Mullen shot at the 38:50 mark again went wide, and a tremendous chance from Sarah Wilk off Eastern's third corner just missed a wide-open cage with 24:25 remaining. The Eagles did not record another shot in the second half and the Cavaliers hung on for the one-goal triumph.

Moskey finished with a career-high 10 saves against the Cavaliers and now has 24 saves in her young collegiate career. The Eagles recorded eight shots, led by Wilk's three.

"I cannot knock the heart and work rate this group shows," Eastern Head Coach Jess Shanahan said. "They are relentless, but our attack needs to capitalize on chances given and put the ball away."

The Eagles will return home to Olson Field this coming Saturday, Sept. 10, to host Marywood. The contest is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
