ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - On a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Olson Field, Eastern Women's Soccer battled back from a defensive miscommunication and a one-goal deficit to draw with Marywood 1-1.
Madelyn Mullen scored Eastern's first goal of the season to end the Eagles' three-match losing streak.
The Pacers outshot the Eagles 18-10, which included a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal, but
Brooke Moskey shined in goal for a fourth straight match. The first-year goalkeeper from Kennett Square, Pa. recorded eight saves against Marywood to increase her save total for the season to 32.
The Eagles had four quality scoring chances in the first half, but could not find the back of the net.
Lindsay Kline had two of those opportunities, but both shots went just high over the crossbar. The Pacer also created several high quality looks, but Moskey was up to the task with four saves in the opening 45 minutes.
However, after a scoreless first half, an errant pass in the defensive zone led to a one-on-one for Marywood. Victoria Tzitzis won the battle, firing a shot past Moskey for her fourth goal of the season to give the Pacers a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles answered less than two minutes later. Off a throw-in,
Anna Kidder cleared the ball to just outside the box, where Kline battled with a Marywood defender. In the scrum, Mullen was able to gain control and fire a shot into the bottom left corner of the net to tie the contest at 1-1 and ultimately secure the draw.
"I'm proud of the girls for having more composure in the attacking third being selfish in front of the goal," Eastern Head Coach
Jess Shanahan said. "Madelyn stepped up big and I am happy with the way the team played today."
Kline led the Eagles with three shots, while Mullen and first-year midfielder
Emma Bennett each finished with two.
Eastern Women's Soccer will be back at Olson Field on Tuesday to take on Neumann. The contest is set to begin at 4:30 pm.
