Women's Soccer Settles for Draw with Neumann

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Despite a strong first half and domination in both field position and possession throughout the afternoon, Eastern Women's Soccer played Neumann to a 1-1 draw, its second tie in as many matches.

Madelyn Mullen scored her second goal of the season and both Leah Mowery and Paige Snell notched their first collegiate assists. Mullen led the Eagles with five shots, while first-year forward Nicole Eveland finished with three shots, two of which were on target. Brooke Moskey put forth another solid effort in goal with five saves.

The Eagles (0-3-2) moved the ball efficiently in the first 45 minutes with a combination of sharp passes and crosses and strong runs though the middle of the Neumann defense. In the 19th minute, those factors led to the match's first goal. Snell unleashed a great cross from the left side of the pitch that found a streaking Mowery in front of the cage. The ensuing chance went off the crossbar, but Mullen was there to head it home to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Eastern carried their one-goal advantage into the second half, but the Knights found the equalizer just five minutes in. Liz Purcell uncorked a shot just outside the penalty box off a strong feed from Riley Adinolfi to tie the contest at 1-1.

The Eagles had several strong opportunities after Neumann's (0-3-2) tally, but were unable to put away a game-winner. A Mowery chance from an advantageous position was saved by Neumann goalkeeper Leona Macrina in the 69th minute, and another shot shortly after by Ashtyn Heisey sailed high and wide. Lindsay Kline had a brilliant chance in front of the net in the 77th minute but Macrina was able to make another strong stop. Eastern's best opportunity came on a free kick just outside the box after a Neumannn handball, in the 78th minute, but the Eagles were once again unable to find the back of the net.

"Player are improving and starting to step up offensively, but we need to stay switched on for the full 90 minutes on both sides of the ball," Eastern Head Coach Jess Shanahan said. "We need to capitalize on our chances to put away two or three goals, as well as denying the small and half chances given to the opponent."

Eastern will head to Virginia on Saturday to take on Shenandoah in Winchester. The contest is set to begin at 2:00 pm.
