Field Hockey Falls in Overtime to Stevenson

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey dropped a 4-3 overtime heartbreaker to the visiting Stevenson University Mustangs. The Eagles built an early 3-1 lead, but the Mustangs took advantage of a massive edge in penalty corners to rally and ultimately win the game. Ellie Pruitt had two goals and an assist for the Eagles.

Emma Gladstein scored on a penalty stroke in the 64th minute to end the game. The Mustangs (5-5, 1-1) earned the stroke immediately after their 13th penalty corner of the match.

Pruitt opened the scoring in the fourth minute after Kara Frantz shot a ball into the circle. Morgan Ruhl had an initial deflection and Pruitt tucked home her third goal of the season.

Six minutes later, Stevenson equalized on their only penalty corner of the first quarter. Abby Agapito made the initial save on the high shot from Gladstein, but the rebound came right back to the shooter for a follow.

In the final minute of the first quarter, the Eagles (3-7, 1-2) took the lead on a beautifully executed play on their only penalty corner of the quarter. Morgan Unruh played the insert and finished the goal. Shauger received the pass at the top and slipped a pass to Kara Frantz. Pruitt tipped the drive from Frantz away from the goalie and Unruh volleyed it to the backboard.

Pruitt put the Eagles up early in the second quarter with a drive up the right side. Her cross from in close beat the goalie and went off a Stevenson foot into the goal. The 3-1 lead seemed as though it would last to the second half, but the Mustangs took advantage of a late penalty corner, their fifth of the period, to tie grab back a goal on a nice redirection of a high shot.

Though Eastern held a 3-2 lead, the Mustangs had a 10-to-4 edge in first-half shots and a 6-to-1 edge in penalty corners.

The disparity in penalty corners grew in the third, Gladstein scored another rebound chance to tie the match in the 39th minute.

The Eagles had the final penalty corner of both the third quarter and of regulation but were unable to capitalize. The Mustangs earned their final corner and created the stroke with a hard shot from the top that went off an Eastern foot on the goal line. Agapito finished with ten saves.

"[We]Started out strong once again with some great offense," Head Coach Abbey Kemble said after the match. "We were finding connections to put the ball away. Unfortunately, we struggled with continuing that level of play through second half. We are looking to grow our mental game for the full 60 in games to come."

The Eagles will host Lancaster Bible College on Wednesday before returning to MAC Commonwealth play for an 11:00 AM Homecoming game against Messiah.
