Field Hockey Blanks Delaware Valley

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey used a solid defensive effort from all over the field to stop the visiting Delaware Valley University Aggies (3-6) and earn a second consecutive win. Sydney Davis and Morgan Unruh each scored in the win.

After a scoreless first period, the Eagles (3-6) found the only goal they would need on a penalty corner in the 26th minute. Unruh started and finished the play. The first-year forward played the insert to the top of the circle. Emerson Shauger drew the defense in and flipped a pass to Kara Frantz on the right wing. Frantz drove a ball toward the back post. Emma Kircher had the first redirection in the middle, and Unruh had made her way to the back post for her second goal of the year.

While the shot totals were pretty close for the second period, the Eagles looked like they were going to break through even earlier, but Ellie Pruitt hit the inside of the post and Del Val goalie Alyssa Rudd made a sprawling save on Shauger's rebound attempt. Abby Agapito made four of her five saves in the first half.

Eastern added an important insurance goal midway through the third. Morgan Ruhl picked up a pass from Pruitt just above the circle and spun her way through a pair of Aggie defenders to earn the circle. In alone on Rudd, she saw her shot stopped but redirected it to the back post. Davis converted for her third goal in the last two games.

Agapito made several plays to clear the circle in the second half, but the bulk of the defensive work was done to keep the Aggies out of the circle. Grace Wise, Abby Schiavone, and Kircher played well in the back row, and Lily White, Paige Brouse, and Becca Webb kept the Eagles in command of the midfield for much of the day.

In the fourth quarter, Ruhl had a shot kicked away at the last possible minute. She beat Rudd with the initial shot but the Aggie goalie somehow retreated and kicked the ball clear. Eastern had a 13-7 edge in shots. Both teams had five penalty corners.

"We came out on fire," Head Coach Abbey Kemble  said after the match. "I am really happy with our distribution and that we finished on cage. Looking forward to continuing the streak!"

Eastern will host Stevenson in a MAC Commonwealth contest on Saturday at 11:00.
