FREDERICK, Md.– Eastern University Field Hockey scored the first three goals of the match and held on to earn a 3-2 MAC Commonwealth win at Hood College.
Sydney Davis scored twice for the Eagles int he win.
Though the Eagles had only one first-quarter shot,
Kara Frantz made it count. Late in the frame,
Lily White earned the circle with a strong run up the right side. Frantz slammed home her centering pass for a 1-0 edge. Hood had the first four shots of the game.
Abby Agapito made two of her eight saves to keep the game level.
Early in the second quarter,
Morgan Unruh created the second goal with a strong run through the middle. The rookie midfielder earned the circle and slipped the ball past the onrushing goalie. Davis was in the right spot to slam in her first of the year.
The Blazers had two chances to halve the lead, but Agapito saved a penalty stroke and White recorded her team-best sixth defensive save of the year.
Davis did much more of the work for her second goal. With three minutes to play in the half, the junior forward intercepted a pass at midfield, split two defenders, and raced toward goal. She slipped a shot under the goalie for a 3-0 lead.
It seems the game would go to the half at 3-0 , but the hosts took advantage of a turnover deep in the Eastern end and pulled within two on a reverse-stick effort from a tight angle. The Eagles had the final chance of the half, but Hood Goalie Richana Brown made a sprawling save on
Abby Hakes just before the buzzer. Eastern had an 8-5 edge in second-quarter shots.
The Eagles had a 6-2 edge in second-half penalty corners, but the Blazers scored the only goal after intermission. Their goal came off a rebound in the 36th minute. The Eastern defense kept Hood without a shot or penalty corner in the fourth quarter.
"We started the game very well and were rewarded early," Head Coach
Abbey Kemble said after the match. "We controlled the game on both sides of the ball and put them away today. I'm proud of how we played with cohesion and composure. Our goal is to carry this momentum into a challenging test on Tuesday. We have to be ready to battle physically."
Eastern (2-6, 1-1) will host Delaware Valley University at 4:00 pm on Tuesday.
