IMMACULATA, Pa. - Three goals in the opening 14 minutes proved to be the difference on Wednesday evening as Eastern Women's Soccer recorded its first win of the season in a 4-0 triumph over Immaculata. Four different players scored as the Eagles controlled the contest from the opening kickoff. Additionally,
Jess Shanahan collected her first win as the Head Coach of the Eastern Women's Soccer program.
It did not take long for Eastern to break the scoreless tie. After a strong pass through a channel on the right side of the field,
Lindsay Kline one-touched the ball to a streaking
Madelyn Mullen. The junior forward took advantage of the scoring chance, firing a shot into the bottom left corner of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of play. It was Mullen's team-leading third goal of the season.
Six minutes later, off a throw-in, Mullen found midfielder
Leah Mowery wide open in front of the cage. In prime position, the sophomore fired the ball high above the Immaculata goalkeeper for her first career goal and a 2-0 Eastern advantage.
The Eagles' offensive barrage continued in the 14th minute. Off a free kick from
Ashley Hollinger, Kline scored her first goal of the season off a strong, right-footed shot to increase Eastern's advantage to three. For Hollinger, it was her first collegiate assist.
Eastern added an insurance goal early in the second half after another strong pass from Mullen in front of the net. After crossing up her defender, Mullen found first-year forward
Ashtyn Heisey on the left side, who finished off the play with her first collegiate goal. Mullen put together a tremendous performance for Eastern with a goal and two assists in the victory, while Kline finished with a goal and an assist.
"Madelyn had a phenomenal game, seeing multiple opportunities because of her dynamic movements and aggression," Shanahan said. "Our captain Lindsay shined as always, but this time getting higher into the attack and getting onto the scoresheet."
For the match, the Eagles outshot the Mighty Macs 16-5, which included an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Brooke Moskey recorded her first collegiate win and shutout, making four saves in the triumph.
"Today, the girls capitalized on chances, seeing the results of their continuous hard work," Shanahan continued. "They responded and I am proud of the way we played as a whole."
Eastern will return home Saturday to take on Marymount University at Olson Field. The contest is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
