ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - After a two-match road trip, Eastern Women's Soccer returned home Saturday for a 90-minute battle against Marymount on Olson Field. The Saints struck first, but
Leah Mowery's goal in the 66th minute allowed the Eagles to salvage a 1-1 draw.
Eastern controlled the pace of play early, but the Saints were able to settle into their gameplan and both teams battled for control in the midfield. The Eagles and Saints combined for just four shots in the period, with the best chance for Eastern coming into the 27th minute.
Madelyn Mullen found herself right in front of the cage, but Marymount goalkeeper Hannah Mockenhaupt was able to make the save and keep the contest scoreless.
After a few brilliant stops from
Brooke Moskey, including one on a one-on-one chance from the Saints, Marymount was able to break the scoreless tie on a corner kick. Laney Placido's restart found twine in the 62nd minute to give the Saints a 1-0 advantage.
However, the Eagles were able to respond just four minutes later. After controlling the possession in the offensive zone for most of the second half up to that point, Mullen guided the ball to Mowery just outside the penalty box. The sophomore from Harleysville lifted the ball over Mockenhaupt's head and into the net to tie the contest at 1-1. For Mowery, it was her second goal in as many matches, while Mullen recorded her third assist in her last two outings.
"It was a very physical game with Marymount, and we knew it was going to be a battle," Eastern Head Coach
Jess Shanahan said. "The talk at halftime challenged the team and the girls respond in that second half with a lot of energy and a great goal from Leah. They were a completely different team in the second half."
Marymount outshot Eastern 8-6, but both teams finished with four shots on target. Mowery led the way with three shots, two of which were on goal. Moskey finished the contest with three saves.
Eastern will be back at Olson Field on Wednesday, Sept. 28 to take on Moravian University. The contest is set to begin at 4:00 pm.
