ST. DAVIDS, Pa.–
Ryan Jammes headed home a game-winner in the final seconds to lift Eastern University Men's Soccer to a 2-1 win over the visiting Lehman College Lightning (0-2-1).
The Eagles had several chances through the second half, but it looked as though the game would finish in a draw as Eastern turned away a Lehman attack with under a minute to play. Gabe Velazquez won a header deep in the Eastern end and the Eagles earned a throw at midfield. Jammes, playing right back, received the throw and dribbled infield against a pair of Lehman defenders. One of the defenders dropped him with a hard foul before he could release the ball to
Emmanuel Hewitt on the left flank.
After the foul, the referee stopped the clock. This gave the Eagles a chance to get numbers in the box with less than ten seconds to play. Velazquez clipped a serve into the box, and Jammes redirected the ball into the upper left corner of the goal for the win.
The winner came after the Eagles saw several created chances go unfinished through the second half. The Eagles finished with a 15-12 advantage in shots, but several of the best Eastern opportunities came on restarts where dangerous serves fell to the ground and never got sent toward goal. Lehman goalie Adrian Magana-Santos made his only save of the match on a brilliant turn and shot from
Derek Buhrman in the 65th minute.
The Eagles had a tremendous chance in the opening seconds and Buhrman found
Evan Cope on the doorstep. Cope could not get the initial touch out of his feet, but had a second chance blocked at the goal line by a defender.
Moments later, the Eagles found a lead.
Jake Morales created the chance with a steal deep in Eastern territory. The senior forward dribbled central and released a right-footed shot. Buhrman redirected the attempt and caught the Lehman keeper moving the other way. The ball rolled slowly over the goal line to put the Eagles up.
Eastern continued to apply pressure without doubling the edge. The Lightning found their equalizer against the run of play in the 36th minute. The Eagles had a 9-6 edge in first-half shots.
The Lightning started the second half on the front foot, but the Eagles saw the game change around the hour mark. Though they held an advantage in possession and field position, the game seemed destined to end in a draw. There is no longer overtime in NCAA soccer regular-season matches.
"It's great to get the first win of the year," Head Coach
Glodi Konga said of the victory. "The guys battled hard and controlled the game to put it away at the end. I'm proud of how we came together and played as a unit. We're growing as a team. Now it's time to rest and get ready for the next one."
The Eagles have only a few days to recover as they return to Olson Field for two matches this coming week. The Eagles host Cairn University on Wednesday and Eagle Road rival Cabrini University on Saturday.
