Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Settles for Draw With Cairn

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Despite controlling much of the game, Eastern University Men's Soccer needed a 68th minute penalty kick to salvage a 2-2 tie agains the visiting Cairn University Highlanders. Senior captain Aidan Link converted from the spot to level the score. The Eagles had a 15-to-3 edge in second-half shots.

The two teams played most of the first half in the midfield, and it looked as though the game would go to the break without a goal. As is often the case, a restart changed things. Battling for a high ball, Evan Cope was pulled down about forty yards from goal with less than four minutes to play in the half. With both his center backs in the box, Gabe Velazquez curled a ball toward the back post. A Cairn defender headed the ball to keep it from reaching its target. His header slipped into the upper corner to put the Eagles up 1-0. That lead stood until the break.

The Highlanders found possession early in the second half and pressed into the Eastern zone. The visitors found the equalizer on a clever slip pass at the edge of the box and a first-time finish off the right upright from Jesse Brittain. Ten minutes later, Cairn grabbed the lead on a magnificent curling shot into the upper right corner of the goal.

Down 2-1, the Eagles found urgency and direction in the attack, but they could not get shots on frame. Marino Iandolo, Emmanuel Hewitt, and Link all had shots off target before Link hit the underside of the crossbar with a thirty-yard blast. The shot beat the Cairn goalkeeper and bounced back into play. In the ensuing chaos, a Cairn defender upended Haroon Husseini in front of the goal for a penalty kick. Link sent the keeper the wrong way and converted.

With no overtime, the Eagles had 23 minutes to find the winner. Unlike Sunday's finish against Lehman, there was no miracle finish. The Eagles did have a restart in the final seconds , but with the clock still running, the Eagles were unable to capitalize on the chance.

The Eagles (1-3-1) will host Eagle Road rival Cabrini University at 2:00 pm on Saturday.
