Strong All-Around Performance Lifts Baseball over Alvernia

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Fresh off its thrilling victory over Hood, Eastern Baseball won its second conference game in a row on Tuesday afternoon. Behind strong pitching performances from Tanner Creel and Andy Ramos, combined with a balanced offensive attack, the Eagles (9-17, 2-3 MACC) led wire-to-wire in a 6-4 triumph over the Alvernia Golden Wolves. It was the Eagles' second straight win over their MAC Commonwealth rival.

Creel (3-2) earned the third victory of his collegiate career on the mound. The Troy, Tx. native pitched a solid seven innings, allowing just five hits and two earned runs while striking out four, the second-most batters he has struck out in a game this season. After coming into the contest in relief in the eighth inning, Ramos shut the door. The first-year pitcher gave up zero runs and just two hits in the final two innings of work, recording his first collegiate save in the process.

At this dish, Sean Cottrell picked up right where he left off on Saturday, finishing 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles, increasing his RBI total to 31. Draig Cooley, Aaron Santos, and Jason Hall all drove in runs for the Eagles, while Matt McHale and David Hunsberger each scored a pair of runs.

Cottrell got the scoring started for the Eagles in the bottom of the first inning. After a two-out double to the left field wall by McHale, Cottrell dropped a base hit in shallow left field to score the Eastern centerfielder for the 1-0 lead.

Cooley added to the Eagles lead in the bottom of the third. Hunsberger led off the frame for a walk, before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Cooley followed with a ripper to right field, plating Hunsberger for the 2-0 advantage. A Hall RBI sacrifice bunt made it 3-0 in the fourth, before Cottrell's second RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Santos in the fifth increased the Eastern lead to 5-0.

Alvernia came roaring back in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs, two on an error and all with two outs, to trim Eastern's advantage to one run. Creel, however, kept his composure, notching a strikeout to halt the Golden Wolves' rally and preserve the Eagles' lead.

Eastern was able to get a run back in the bottom of the sixth. Hunsberger, for the second time in the contest, walked, stole second, and reached third on a fielding error, before scoring on a wild pitch moments later to put the Eagles ahead 6-4.

Ramos did the rest, escaping a two-baserunner jam in the eighth and pitching a scoreless ninth to secure Eastern's second MAC Commonwealth win.

"That was one of the first games we put it all together," Eastern Head Coach Scott Renauro said. "We pitched it well, defended well, and barreled a lot of baseballs. Up and down the lineup, we had production. This week, we spoke about being the aggressor and today we did that. We didn't play timid or wait for the game to happen, but played the aggressive style we wanted to."

Eastern will do battle again with Alvernia this coming Friday in Reading. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
