READING, Pa. - Through six-and-a-half innings, Eastern Baseball's ( pitching and defense held the Alvernia Golden Wolves' offense in check. However, a three-run bottom of the seventh for the home team proved to be enough as the Eagles fell to Alvernia 3-2 on Friday evening. The Eagles and Golden Wolves split the season series, each having won on their home field.
David Hunsberger had a strong day at the plate for the Eagles. The junior first basemen finished 2-for-4 from the dish and drove in both of Eastern's runs.
Mark Cruser and
Draig Cooley also collected two hits for the Eagles.
Gavin Mikulski (1-2) was efficient through seven innings despite the loss, issuing zero walks while striking out three. Additionally,
Carter Cranmer was once again efficient in relief, not giving a hit in his lone inning of work.
The Eagles struck first in the top of the second frame. Cruser,
Logan Klember, and
Garrett Friend all singled to load the bases with two outs and Hunsberger delivered, plating Klember with a base hit to left field. Mikulski cruised through the opening six frames, retiring 21 of the first 24 batters he faced to help the Eagles keep their 1-0 advantage.
After
Aaron Santos began the seventh inning by inducing a walk, Hunsberger struck again, this time with an RBI single to right field to increase Eastern's lead to 2-0.
The Golden Wolves, however, finally found their offense in the bottom of the inning, using four hits and one Eastern error to turn their two-run deficit into a one-run lead they would not relinquish. The Eagles had their chances in the final two innings, but a double play in the eighth and a runner left stranded on second in the ninth ended Eastern's comeback bid.
"The guys battled today at the plate and on the mound," Eastern Head Coach
Scott Renauro said. "We have to clean things up on the defensive end. Today was definitely not the best hitting conditions and we stuck with approaches. A few things go our way instead of theirs and we win that game by a couple of runs."
Eastern will be back in action at Messiah tomorrow for a pair of contests with the Falcons. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
