Baseball Falls to Neumann in Final Non-League Contest

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - In an offensive slugfest on Wednesday night, Eastern Baseball dropped a 19-13 decision to Neumann in its final non-conference game of the season. The visiting Knights, after just two hits and one run in the first four frames, recorded 18 runs on 18 hits in the final five to secure the victory.

The Eagles finished with 14 hits in the contest. Logan Klember and Jason Hall combined for six hits, while Draig Cooley finished 2-for-4 with an inside-the-park home run, four runs scored, and three runs batted in. Sean Cottrell drove in a pair of runs and hit his seventh home run of the season, while Klember and Mark Cruser also recorded a pair of RBIs. Griffin Falco added a pair of hits.

With three stolen bases against the Knights, Eastern junior David Hunsberger made history, becoming the Eagles' single-season leader with 21. He surpassed Tim Stephan, who swiped 20 bags back in 2006.

"Dave has been receptive toward Coach [Corey] Paluga's base running philosophy, so it was great to see him break the record," Eastern Head Coach Scott Renauro said.

After Neumann led off the game with a home run, Eastern countered with seven runs in the third and fourth frames. The Eagles scored six in the third, courtesy of a Cooley RBI single, a Cottrell sacrifice fly, and two-run singles by both Cruser and Klember. Hunsberger added an RBI knock of his own in the fourth to increase Eastern's advantage to six.

However, the Knights took control from there. Neumann answered with five runs in the fifth, six runs in the sixth, and four runs in the seventh to take a lead they would not relinquish. Eastern scored five straight runs to cut the Neumann lead to 16-12 heading into the ninth, but a bases-clearing double by the Knights helped to stifle the Eagles' comeback bid.

"Our offense did a very nice job making their pitchers work," Renauro continued. "They were seeing it well at the plate and we capitalized in big situations early in the game. Unfortunately, when we give up that many hits, it is very tough to win a game."

Eastern will be back at The Yard on Friday afternoon for its final regular season game of the season against Albright. First pitch is set for 4:00 pm.
