ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - In it final game of the season on Friday night, Eastern Baseball ended the 2022 campaign on a high note. Trailing by two in the bottom of the ninth, Sean Cottrell delivered his second game-winning hit of the year to give the Eagles a 9-8 triumph over Albright on Senior Day.
Eastern grabbed the early advantage with four runs in the bottom of the third frame. Cottrell broke the scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly to left field, before doubles by Mark Cruser, Griffin Falco, and Lang put the Eagles ahead by a score of 4-0.
The Lions came roaring back over the next two innings. Albright scored three runs in the fifth frame, before adding another run in the sixth to tie the contest at 4-4. Eastern regained the lead at 6-4 on a David Hunsberger RBI double and a Cruser sacrifice fly, before Albright scored two runs in each the seventh and eighth frames to grab an 8-6 advantage.
Brock Langlotz and Brian Lang walked to begin the ninth, before a sacrifice bunt by Logan Klember advanced pinch runners Connor Schilling and Stephen Peterson. Draig Cooley delivered a few moments later with a single through the left-side, which tied the contest at 8-8.
After Matt McHale was intentionally walked, he and Cooley executed a perfect double steal, which put them on second and third, respectively, with one out. Cottrell followed with a towering hit that sailed over the head of Albright's right fielder, scoring Cooley and securing the Eagles' 14th win of the year.
In his final game as an Eagle, Cooley finished 4-for-6 from the dish with a triple, two runs scored, and two RBI. Matt McHale ended his brilliant Eastern career with a pair of hits and a run scored, while Falco also finished with a pair of hits. Cottrell collected his 40th RBI of the season on his 40th hit, while Cruser also drove in a pair of runs. John Beck (2-3) earned his second win in as many appearances. The sophomore righty from Butler, N.J. went three innings in relief with five strikeouts.
The Eagles end the 2022 season with a 14-25 record and a 7-9 mark in MAC Commonwealth play.
