Women's Lacrosse Scores 13 in Loss to Alvernia

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Lacrosse used a strong day on draw controls to compete throughout in a tough 26-13 loss to the Alvernia University Golden Wolves. Alvernia scored nine of the final 11 goals in the game to pull away late. Hailey Ferry scored six times and grabbed eight draws, and Cecilia Wilson corralled 13 draw controls and scored twice.

The Golden Wolves built a 10-3 lead early, but the Eagles found a spark in the second period. Caitlyn Quizon converted a pass from Kaitlyn Blankly to start a four goal burst over a two minute stretch. Wilson scored a on a strong drive up the left alley for the second and 35 seconds later Teresa Gailey found a cutting Emerson Shauger for goal from in close.

Gailey also set up the final goal of the burst with with a feed to Quizon in close. Quizon got her hands free for an underhanded shot in close, but the Alvernia goalie closed off the effort and the ball popped in the air. Quizon saw the floating ball and tapped it over the goalie to pull the Eagles to within three goals at 10-7.

The Golden Wolves stopped the run with a goal midway through the period, but Ferry had an answer with a a free-position goal. Ferry was a perfect 4-for-4 on free-position attempts for the game. The Golden Wolves scored the final two goals of the first half to hold a 13-8 lead at the half.

Eastern had a 14-9 edge in first-half draws, and Kelly Steenstra made six of her 11 saves before intermission.

Though the two sides battled through the third period, the Golden Wolves had taken their opportunities well and held a 17-11 lead with three and a half minutes to play in the period. Alvernia scored three times in the final two minutes of the period to build a nine-goal edge.

Shauger scored in each of the final three periods. Erika Whitmoyer scored 10 goals to lead the Alvernia attack. Alvernia starting goalie Kasey Fox made eight saves to earn the win.

The Eagles (1-11, 0-5) are off for the Easter weekend. They will return to MAC Commonwealth action at Albright next Wednesday.
