ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Trailing by two runs after five innings of play, Eastern Softball (13-8) rallied in the final two frames to defeat the Swarthmore College Garnet 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon. Kelci Cost capped off the comeback with an RBI fielders choice to walk it off and hand the Garnet (16-4) just their fourth loss of the season. It was the 301st coaching victory for Eastern Head Coach Terri Adams, who collected her 300th win on Saturday at York.
Cost went 2-for-4 from the dish with a double, a bunt single and her game-winning RBI. Rupe collected two hits in her two official at-bats and scored the game-winning run, while Tori Hook finished 1-for-3 with an RBI single. Elena Iannuzzelli added a hit and two runs scored.
The Garnet struck first with single runs in the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Eagles were able to get a run back in the third on a fielding error. After Iannuzzelli singled to shortstop to lead off the frame, a throwing miscue scored her all the way from first base, which cut the Garnet lead in half.
Swarthmore regained its two-run advantage in the top of the fourth, but as the game progressed, the Eagles began to put together more quality at-bats. Cost led off the sixth with a double to left-center field and advanced to third on a wild throw. After two straight outs, Hook came up big with an RBI single to left field, trimming the Swarthmore advantage to 3-2.
Needing two runs to win, Iannuzzelli began the rally with one-out walk, before Rupe laid a perfect bunt down the third base line to put runners on the corners. Another Garnet fielding error allowed Iannuzzelli to score, tying the contest at 3-3. After Rupe and Susana Perez advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, the former put the finishing touches on Eastern's 13th win, just beating the throw home on Cost's game-winning fielders choice.
In the circle, Jania Long (5-5), despite giving up 11 hits to a strong Swarthmore lineup, recorded one the best outings of her collegiate career. The first-year pitcher struck out a career-high seven batters and allowed just two earned runs in the win.
Eastern is back in action on Thursday with a home doubleheader against MAC Commonwealth foe Albright. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
