ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Behind an eight-run fourth inning, and despite a near two-hour rain delay, Eastern Softball salvaged its two-game set with Albright with a 9-1, run-rule triumph in game two. Eastern sent 12 batters to the plate in the frame and scored on six hits and one Albright fielding error.
Tori Hook and Victoria Perez combined for four hits and three RBIs in the second game triumph, while Jania Long finished with a hit and two RBIs. Long also provided the only offense for the Eagles in the opener with a solo shot to right-center field. Long now has four home runs for the Eagles, good for the team lead. Elena Iannuzzelli went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI, while Kelci Cost and Meghan Johnson each added a hit for Eastern.
Perez (4-1) collected her fourth win of the season in the circle. Over four innings, the sophomore hurler allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out four.
The Lions struck first in the top of the first with an RBI double, but the Eagles responded in the home half of the frame. Susana Perez led off the inning with a walk, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. A sacrifice bunt from Cost put Perez on third, and Long capitalized, scoring the Eagles' catcher to tie the contest at 1-1.
Perez found her groove in the next three frames. Of the next 11 batter she faced, she retired nine of them, which kept the contest tied heading into the bottom of the fourth frame.
The Eagles' offense came to life in the fourth before the eventual rain delay. Iannuzzelli gave Eastern the lead for good on an RBI single through the left side, which scored Sena Kaper-Dale. An RBI fielders choice from Sophie Rollins scored Iannuzzelli and Johnson to increase the Eagles' advantage to 4-1, before a sacrifice fly from Cost and back-to-back doubles from Hook and Long made it 7-1 before the rain forced a stoppage in play.
Thanks to the brilliant work of Eastern groundskeeper Marcus von Hertsenberg, and with the help of several others, the game was able to be finished after the rain had passed. After the fourth inning resumed, Victoria Perez secured the run-rule victory with a two-run single to right field. Hailey Krichten ended the contest with a perfect fifth frame, sitting down every batter she faced.
Eastern will back in action this coming Wednesday with a pair of contests at Widener. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3:00 pm.
