CHESTER, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Lacrosse scored six of the final seven goals of the game to earn a 15-13 road win against the Widener University Pride.
Connor Killion scored five times to lead the Eagles. The junior attack scored scored his fifth goal with less than two minutes left in regulation to put the Eagles up for good.
The Pride (2-6, 0-1) led 10-8 at halftime and scored on the opening possession of the second half to build a three-goal edge. A minute later, Killion scored in transition to close the gap back to two goals. Killion had another chance in transition to close the gap midway through the third quarter. His overhand shot hit the inside of the post and ricocheted back toward midfield where the Pride regained possession with an 11-9 lead. Widener's next shot also hit the inside of the post. That shot, however, went in, and Widener led 12-9 with six minutes left in the third period.
While the Eastern defense had begun to slow the Widener attack, the Eagles needed to to put together a run to close the gap. Killion put away a man-up chance to pull within two, and
Connor Bachman buried his second of the game after
Patrick McClain won another faceoff. The Eagles trailed 12-11 heading into the fourth.
With the possession clock winding down,
Nicholas Fanelli did work from behind the goal to tie the game. The junior attack circled the crease and fired a back-handed shot into the bottom of the net to tie the game.
Widener went up a man with 8:11 on the clock. The Pride got a shot from short-range, but
Ethan Myers saw it well and made the save. He fired an outlet toward midfield.
Brady Palmer caught the ball on the run and did not slow down. The first-year LSM threw a quick fake as he entered the scoring area and then slipped a pass to
Nicholas Fanelli for a man-down goal and a 13-12 lead.
The Pride equalized on the next possession. The Eagles had an extended possession end without a goal and the Pride had a shot for the lead with two minutes left. Myers again saw the shot the whole way and made the stop. He made six of his 13 saves in the fourth quarter. He fired an outlet pass forward. The Eagles earned the clear, but a Pride check knocked the ball to the ground. Killion emerged from a crowd of players with the ball and running to his left hand. His overhand shot put the Eagles up for good.
Nicholas Fanelli scored his fourth of the day after forcing a turnover in a deep position.
"I keep coming back to the word resilience," Head Coach
Kevin Wallace said after the win. "We were missing an important guy in each of our midfield groups,a nd we were down three goals. We had guys make big plays to get a very important conference win. Our defense played really well in the second half, and Connor made some big shots and picked up a couple big ground balls in the fourth quarter. Nicholas sealed the game with a great effort play on the ride. We still have things to work on, but it is good to get this win.
The Eagles led 6-3 in the first quarter, but the Pride scored twice in the final three minutes of the first and three more in the first four mintues of the second to take the lead. The Eagles tied the game at 8-8 on a
Nick Litzenberger goal, but Widener scored twice in the closing minutes of the half to grab the lead.
The Eagles had a 27-20 edge in first-half shots but were undone by ten turnovers in that same time. Litzenberger had two goals on the day.
Christopher Fanelli, and
Nate Portrey each scored once. McClain won 21-of-27 faceoffs.
The Eagles are at York College on Saturday.
