ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - In its conference opener, Eastern Baseball struggled to contain a high-powered Widener offense in a 16-2 loss on Tuesday evening at The Yard. The Pride recorded 18 hits in the contest, scoring at least two runs in four straight innings.
Brad Clemens continued his recent strong play, batting 2-for-5 with a pair of singles, while Matt McHale collected his fifth double and 14th RBI of the season. Connor Schilling, Griffin Falco, Draig Cooley, and Mark Cruser also added hits for the Eagles. On the mound, Carter Cranmer was efficient in his three innings of work, striking out five and giving up just one run.
After a quick top of the first inning, the Eagles looked prime to strike first, but an inning-ending double-play set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. The Pride answered with a pair of runs in the second inning, before sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs in the third, seven of which came with two outs. Widener scored five more runs between the fourth and fifth frames to put the contest out of reach.
Eastern (7-14) will be back in action on the road Wednesday night, traveling down Lancaster Avenue to take on Haverford (8-10). First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
