Women's Lacrosse Falls in Overtime at Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J.– Eastern University Women's Lacrosse dropped a heartbreaking 13-12 decision in overtime at Rutgers-Camden. Caitlyn Quizon scored three goals and Emerson Shauger, Ellie Pruitt, and Hailey Ferry each tallied two goals and two assists.

The Eagles (0-2) were down a player because of a yellow card but still forced a turnover late in regulation and had a chance to win the game. Pruitt worked against pressure from the defense and the clock and launched a shot that slipped wide just before the horn.

The host Raptors (1-0) won the draw control in overtime and took advantage of the man-advantage to get their match-ups right and  Claire Gailliout converted her fifth goal of the day for the game-winner.

The Eagles strung together five consecutive goals to build a 7-3 advantage at the midpoint of the second quarter, but the Raptors scored the final two goals of the first half and tied the game at 8-8 with five minutes left in the third quarter.

Cecilia Wilson put the Eagles up on an assist from Shauger with less than a minute to go in the third period, but Rutgers-Camden scored twice in the final minute of the period to lead going into the final frame.

Ferry scored off the opening draw of the fourth period and then put the Eagles 11-10 up on a 10-yard rocket in transition from Pruitt. Things looked even better for the Eagles when Quizon converted from in close on a pass from Pruitt with 9:24 on the clock.

The two-goal edge, however, did not last. The Raptors scored off the ensuing draw and scored again with six minutes left in regulation.

The Eagles had two good chances to take the lead before Wilson was given a yellow card after a collision in the midfield with two minutes to play. The Raptors looked to be holding for a late shot, but tight defense resulted in a turnover and the Eagles earned a final chance in regulation.

Wilson gathered 10 draw controls and Ferry had eight as the Eagles controlled the restart game. Rutgers Camden goalie G Bellon made 14 saves to earn the win.

Eastern plays at Lancaster Bible next Tuesday.
