ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Lacrosse closed an early six-goal gap to three midway through the third period, but the visiting Neumann University Knights pulled away late to earn a 17-8 win.
Caitlyn Quizon scored four times to lead the Eastern attack.
The Knights (4-2) controlled the draws early and built a 6-0 lead before Cecilia Wilson put hte Eagles on the board in the waning seconds of the opening frame. Neumann opened the scoring in the second quarter before the Eagles put away three goals in a row to pull within three at 7-4. Quizon converted a free-position shot to start the burst. Hailey Ferry with less than two seconds left on the possession clock.
Emerson Shauger pulled the Eagles to within three goals with 83 seconds left in the half.
The Eagles had an 8-to-4 edge in shots in the second period and an 8-to-2 advantage in ground balls.
Kelly Steenstra finished the first half with four saves.
The two teams traded goals through the early part of the third period. Quizon scored twice and Ferry put away a free position goal.
With the Eagles within three, the Knight's advantage on the circle came into play. The Eagles, without
Ellie Pruitt playing, were missing a key piece of a draw control unit that has been a strength for the squad early on in the year. Neumann won consecutive draws and converted to push the lead to 12-7. They scored twice more in the third and tallied the first three goals of the fourth. Quizon scored the final goal of the day on a strong dodge with five minutes left.
The Eagles are slated to play at Keystone College on Wednesday.
