WILKES-BARRE, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Volleyball earned an historic three-set win over Arcadia, but settled for a split after dropping a five-set decision to the host King's College Monarchs in the second match of the day.
Foster Lobb finished the day with 42 kills to lead the Eagles.
The Eagles (6-9, 2-5 MAC) hit .264 and limited the Knights to a .103 hitting percentage in earning the win in the opener. It was the first win over Arcadia in Eastern program history.
With the opening set tied at 11, the Eagles scored a pair of points with Lobb at the service line to grab the lead for good.
Rodney Quarles put down an out-of-system kill for the 12-11 lead and then combined with
Andres Suarez for a block. The Knights pulled within two points at 19-17, but the Eagles were able to score with both
Chris Miller and Lobb at the service line for a 25-18 win. Suarez capped the set with a final kill.
The Eagles own the first four points of the second set and never trailed on the way to a 25-16 win. Quarles closed out the set with two aces to cap a four-point serving run. Eastern hit .286 in the second set.
The Knights led 14-12 in the third before
Justin Flor stopped a three-point run with a kill for a sideout. The two teams traded sideouts to 19-19 before the Eagles earned a point with
Chris Miller at the service line. Up 21-20, the Eagles closed out the win with a kill from Lobb for a sideout, back-to-back aces from Lobb, and an out-of-system kill from Flor.
Trey Miller finished with a match-best 12 digs.
Chris Miller had 24 assists.
"Despite the 2-plus hour drive we came out very motivated to play Arcadia," Head Coach
Randy Syracuse said after the match. "Though we did not look like we matched-up physically with Arcadia, the guys were aggressive throughout. They were making touches on the block, digging around it, and finished plays when they needed to. They played with a confidence that comes from battling the top teams in the country and it was this attitude that allowed us to pull away from closely contested sets in the first two sets. I was very pleased with how they stayed the course after losing a lead temporarily in the third set.
The Eagles had to turn around quickly to play against the host Monarchs. King's, with one of the tallest rosters in the MAC, lost in five to Arcadia earlier in the day.
The Eagles did not have the same sharpness to start the second match. Despite nine service errors, they still had two service opportunities to win the opening set. The Monarchs emerged with a 30-28 win in the opener. Led by Lobb with nine, the Eagles had 17 kills in the set and hit .289 but could not overcome the errors.
After the Monarchs won the second set 25-18, the Eagles found their feet and rallied. Lobb and Flor each had six kills and
Lucas Adam tallied four as the Eagles hit a stunning .432 on the way to a 25-21 win in the third. The Monarchs actually hit .500 in the set.
Both offenses went cold in the fourth. Despite hitting .075 in the frame, the Eagles ground out a 25-23 win to set up a decisive fifth set.
The Eagles had the set tied at 8-8 before falling behind three. Lobb earned two points on serve to tie the set and the match, but the Monarchs scored the final two points to claim the win.
Lobb finished with a career-high 32 kills and 12 digs and Flor added 16 kills and 13 digs.
Chris Miller had 61 assists in the loss.
"After set two, we talked about getting through and taking a set," Syracuse added. "It is tough to come back right after a very competitive match. We were able to beak through and we carried that determination to win the fourth. We were giving everything we had in the back-and-forth fifth, but there was not a lot gas left in the tanks. I am very proud of the effort and teamwork put forth by our guys today."
The Eagles will host Widener on Wednesday. They will honor their seniors before the match.
