COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Coming off its emphatic victory over Cairn, Eastern Baseball hit the road on Saturday to do battle with Ursinus College in a pair of contests. Another stout performance from Tanner Creel, and some timely run production in key moments proved to the difference in game one as the Eagles defeated the Bears 3-2.
After a strong relief appearance against Cabrini earlier in the week, Creel (1-1) recorded his first collegiate victory in a complete-game performance. The first-year pitcher from Troy, Tx. pitched all seven innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out five and inducing 13 flyouts.
"Tanner competed on the mound very well,," Eastern Head Coach Scott Renauro said. "He was able to limit there innings by getting action early in counts. He wanted the ball in the seventh and we let him show us what we could do. Our hitters did just enough in the first game to win."
Ursinus struck first, putting one run across in the first inning, but the Eagles tied it up in the top of the second on a bases-loaded balk. After the Bears went 1-2-3 in the top of the second, Eastern added to its advantage with two more runs in their half of the frame. Brad Clemens led off the inning with a double, before Sean Cottrell followed with a double of his own, driving in his 23rd run of the season. Griffin Falco capped off the rally, scoring Cottrell on an RBI groundout.
Creel held down the fort the rest of the way, giving up three hits, all of which were singles. The Bears were able to cut the lead to one in the fifth, but they would not get any closer.
Eastern grabbed the early lead in game two on a Matt McHale RBI double and a Mark Cruser RBI single, but an 11-run second inning by the Bears played a prominent role in Ursinus' eventual 14-4 triumph. McHale and Cruser combined for four hits, while Garrett Friend recorded the first two RBIs of his college career on a pinch-hit double in the seventh.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, returning home to The Yard to take on Valley Forge. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
