RADNOR, Pa. - A pair of four-run innings and 10 hits for the host Cavaliers proved to be the difference on Tuesday night, as Eastern Baseball dropped an 11-3 decision to Eagle Road rival Cabrini at Carroll Field. The Cavaliers led from the onset, scoring three runs in the first three frames before tacking on four in the bottom of the fourth to build a lead they would not relinquish.
After Cabrini grabbed its three-run advantage, the Eagles cut the deficit to one with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Griffin Falco drove in his 13th run of the season with a single to left field, plating Brad Clemens, before Matt McHale scored on a hit by pitch. However, that was as close as the Eagles would get, as the Cavaliers' four-run, bottom half of the frame put them in the drivers' seat.
The Eagles had more chances to cut into the Cabrini lead over the course of the evening, but Eastern left seven runners on base from the fourth inning on. Additionally, the Cabrini defense made several stellar plays, which included a double play in the top of the fifth and a diving grab at shortstop in the top of the sixth, both of which came when the bases were loaded, to keep the Eagles at bay.
Clemens and McHale each finished 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Eastern offense. Clemens also made a highlight reel play at shortstop, making an over-the-shoulder catch before doubling up a Cabrini runner at first base. Falco and Joe Paradise each finished with a hit and an RBI, while Mark Cruser went 1-for-2 from the plate after coming into the game in the sixth inning.
On the mound, first-year pitcher Tanner Creel put together a strong performance in relief. The Troy, Tx. Native pitched four innings, giving up just three runs and one walk while striking out three. Additionally, Creel induced three flyouts and five groundouts in his four frames of work.
Eastern will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, making the trek to New Jersey to take on Montclair State. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
