MONTCLAIR, N.J. - Against a strong Montclair State squad, Eastern Baseball battled, bouncing back from an early five-run deficit to grab a four-run lead at the game's halfway point. However,17 hits from the host Red Hawks, along with five unanswered runs in the final five frames, proved to be the difference in a tough 11-10 loss for the Eagles.
After a strong performance against Cabrini, Brad Clemens carried his momentum over into Wednesday evening, finishing 3-for-5 with a bases-clearing double, three RBIs, and a run scored. Mark Cruser drove in a pair of runs on a pair of sacrifice flies, while Matt McHale recorded another two-hit performance, driving in a run in the process. John Beck was solid in relief for the Eagles, giving up just two hits and one run while striking out two in two innings of work.
Cruser opened the scoring for Eastern (3-10) in the top of the first, scoring Connor Schilling with his first sacrifice fly. However, the lead was short-lived, as Montclair State (11-4) responded with six unanswered runs to take a 6-1 lead into the fourth.
The Eagles clawed their way back, scoring a single run in the fourth on a Griffin Falco RBI single before exploding for eight runs in the fifth to turn their four-run deficit into a four-run advantage. McHale began the rally, singling home Schilling, and Cruser's second sacrifice fly cut the deficit to 6-4. McHale scored on a wild pitch and Brian Lang drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 6, before a Ryan Turban sacrifice fly gave the Eagles their first lead at 7-6. Clemens capped the scoring with his bases-clearing double, giving the Eagles a 10-6 advantage.
However, the Eagles' offense stalled the rest of the way, leaving five runners on base, four in scoring position, over the final four innings. The Red Hawks took advantage, scoring the game's final five runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth. The Eagles had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to bring the tying run home.
Eastern is scheduled to be back in action tomorrow, returning home to The Yard to take on Cairn. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
