Women's Basketball Falls to Cabrini in Eagle Road Tilt

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - In the latest chapter of the Battle of Eagle Road on Tuesday night, Eastern Women's Basketball dropped a 64-46 decision to Cabrini in its home opener. The Eagles hung right with the Cavaliers in the first half, but a 32-18 second half for the visitors proved to be the difference.

The Eagles got off to a quick start, getting off to an early 8-3 advantage on a pair of layups from Taryn Woodson and a fast break jumper from Kayla Jefferson. However, the Cavaliers used a 9-0 run over the next five minutes to turn their five-point deficit into a four-point advantage. The Eagles were able to tie the contest at 12 on a made jumper from Jeriyah Johnson with 1:12 to play in the quarter, but a basket at the buzzer put Cabrini ahead 16-14 at the first quarter break.

Both teams were neck-and-neck throughout most of the second quarter, with neither leading by any more than six points. After the Cavaliers took an 18-15 lead early in the period, sophomore Trinity Upton buried a triple to knot the contest up at 18-18. Cabrini built their advantage to six with 1:22 to play in the first half, but the Eagles were able to cut it two on a Woodson fast break layup. However, an Eastern foul as time expired put the Cavaliers on the line, and the subsequent free throw makes put Cabrini up 32-28 at halftime.

The Eagles continued to keep it close in the third quarter, trailing by just eight points heading into the fourth, but the Cavaliers shut the door. Cabrini scored a game-high 19 points in the final frame and held the Eagles to just nine points. In the second half, the Eagles made just six of their 25 shot attempts.

For the game, the Eagles shot just 15-of-51 from the field in the contest, four-of-15 from beyond the arc, and 12-of-22 from the free throw line, which included just three makes in 10 tries after halftime. Furthermore, the Eagles turned the ball over 25 times and gave up 22 points off of those giveaways.

"We made some critical mistakes at critical times," Eastern Head Coach Eric Houston said. "After that, it just kind of snowballed. And with a young team, it's tough. But we will bounce back. It's still early in the season, and we've got players."

Woodson led the Eagles with 12 points and six rebounds, while Johnson had another strong game off the bench with 10 points and three assists. Kayla Worsley-Wooten added eight points and knocked down a pair of threes.

Eastern will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 17 at Stockton. The contest is set to begin at 6:30 pm.
