GALLOWAY, N.J. - In its third game of the young season on Thursday evening, shooting struggles proved to be the difference as Eastern Women's Basketball dropped a 60-37 decision to the Stockton Ospreys. The Eagles scored just 13 points in the first half and shot just 12-of-60 (20.0 percent) from the field.
Eastern took an early 6-5 lead off a layup from
Taryn Woodson and back-to-back jumpers from
Wynter Bess, but the Ospreys used a 12-0 run to turn their one-point deficit into an 11-point lead. The Eagles were never able to regain the lead, falling behind by nine points after the first quarter.
The Ospreys took control of the contest for good in the second quarter. They outscored the Eagles 16-3 in the period to took a 35-13 lead at the halftime break.
The contest was much closer in the second half as the Ospreys outscored the Eagles by just one point. However, due to their struggles in the first half, Eastern was unable to get any closer than 22 points.
"We are a young team," Eastern Head Coach
Eric Houston said. "We had a lot of open shots, we just couldn't knock anything down, especially in that first half. We played better in the second half, but we just could not get our shots to fall. There is no panic. We will regroup and be ready for Monday."
For the second time in three games, first-year guard
Jeriyah Johnson led the Eagles with 12 points off the bench. Bess finished the contest with eight points, while Woodson led Eastern with seven rebounds.
Eastern will be back at the NEST on Monday evening to take on Immaculate to begin Thanksgiving week. The contest is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
