ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– After an eight-day break, Eastern University Women's Volleyball (11-4, 4-0)shook off some early rust and hit a solid .288 to earn decisive three-set win over the visiting Alvernia University Golden Wolves.
Bridgette Kelly and
Hannah Pringle each had ten kills to lead the Eagles to the MAC Commonwealth win.
Behind seven first-set kills from junior outside hitter Rachel Sipling, the visiting Golden Wolves hit .333 kept things close through the early part of the opening set. Eastern finally earned separation with a four-point run to go up 19-13.
Kaylyn Zeigler had an ace in the run. The Eagles held their advantage to win the first set 25-19. Pringle hit .545 in the first set and matched Sipling with seven kills. Kelly had four kills and
Logan Martin added three.
Though the Eagles hit only .188 in the second set, the Eastern defense adjusted and limited the Golden Wolves to only two kills. Strong serving kept the visitors from getting good swings. When they did get hitting opportunities The Eastern defense picked up balls.
Grace Casagrande had seven of her match-high 15 digs in the second set.
Natalie Saxton had four kills on six attacks and the Eagles won the second set, 25-13.
Lexi Couch and
Rachel Curran took over on the pins for the third set. Curran hit .333 with six kills and Couch had four kills on nine attacks. The two teams were tied at 17 before the Eagles scored eight of the final ten points of the match. Zeigler finished the match by serving the final three points. The junior right side ended the contest with a clean kill on a back-row attack.
Elle Jiron-Bujanda finished the match with 38 assists, three aces, and a pair of blocks.
The Eagles will have the weekend off for homecoming before taking to the road for three matches next week. They will be in league at York College next Tuesday before heading to Baltimore to take on Muhlenberg and Johns Hopkins in a tri-match.
