ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– After leading for much of the match, Eastern University Field Hockey dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the visiting Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks. The team honored seniors
Lily White and
Morgan Ruhl before the contest.
After a first quarter where the ball stayed primarily in the midfield, the Eagles found a goal just before the midpoint of the second period on a goal from the right side.
Kara Frantz played a pass into the circle.
Morgan Unruh settled the pass and blasted a shot wide of the Stevens' goalie. Ruhl was in the right spot to redirect the shot into the left side of the cage for an Eastern lead.
The Eagles continued to press through the remainder of the first half but were unable to double the lead.
After the intermission, the Ducks established an edge in field position and possession and their time in the circle enabled them to begin to earn chances and eventually penalty corners. Stevens had just one penalty corner through the first 41 minutes. The Eastern back row successfully defended two penalty corners in the third period and the first penalty corner of the fourth, but the visitors broke through in the 52nd minute.
The Ducks (9-6) continued to press, but
Abby Agapito made five of her 11 saves in the final eight minutes of regulation.
Overtime, for the Eagles, was far too short. On the opening possession, the Ducks earned a penalty corner and executed against short numbers for the win.
Whether playing on defense or in a the midfield, White, a two-year captain from Lancaster, Pa., has played a critical role in the running the entire game for her entire career. She leads the team with seven defensive saves. Ruhl has six goals and five in her career.
"We won the first half," Head Coach
Abbey Kemble said after the match. "Unfortunately, we didn't win the second. We have gotta keep working; on to the next game."
The Eagles (4-10) return to MAC Commonwealth competition with a home test against Widener on Wednesday.
