ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– In the final home match of the 2022 season, Eastern University Field Hockey dropped a 3-1 decision to MAC Commonwealth rival Widener.
Sydney Davis scored the lone Eastern goal.
After an evenly played first half, the Pride (9-6, 4-2) grabbed the lead as time expired. The Eagles seemed to have cleared the ball from danger, but a Widener steal at midfield left just enough time for a long pass into the circle. Juliana Sanchez tipped home her seventh of the season just before the horn sounded. Widener had a 9-to-2 edge in first-half shots, but Eastern had a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners.
The Pride grabbed two more goals on either side of the third quarter break. Maddie Hoyer ripped a finish on penalty corner in the 43rd minute and Katie Labezius put away a penalty corner only 36 seconds into the final quarter.
The Eagles pressed forward, and their attacking presence was rewarded with a penalty corner in the 51st minute.
Morgan Unruh played the insert and the ball found its way to
Morgan Ruhl. The senior forward bumped the ball off a Widener foot, but the Eagles were given a chance for advantage. Ruhl took the advantage and beat the defense with a move to the left. Davis was at the back post to finish.
The Eagles (4-11, 1-5) had a few more chances late, but the Widener defense turned away a pair of late penalty corners to secure the league win.
Abbey Agapito made 10 saves in the loss.
The Eagles are on the road at York College on Saturday.
