ANNVILE, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey scored the final two goals of the match, but the Eagles ran out of time to find the equalizer in a 3-2 MAC Commonwealth setback at Lebanon Valley College.
Emerson Shauger had a goal and an assist for the Eagles.
The host Dutchmen grabbed a 1-0 lead on a penalty corner in the opening minute and stretched the lead to 3-0 on a pari of goals from tough angles in the third
period.
The Dutchmen held a 10-to-5 advantage in first-half shot and a 6-4 edge in penalty corners, but the Eagles had plenty of time in the LVC circle through the first 45 minutes.
Eastern (4-9, 1-4) finally broke through on a penalty corner goal with ten minutes to play in regulation.
Morgan Unruh played the insert to
Kara Frantz at the top of the circle. After drawing the defense in, Frantz slipped a pass to
Emerson Shauger for a drive on the right side.
JoEl Groff tipped in the shot for her first goal of the 2022 season.
The Eagles continued to press forward and were finally rewarded with a penalty stroke with just a little more than a minute to play. Shauger finished the penalty stroke to trim the LVC lead to 3-2 with a little over a minute to play.
The Dutchmen (6-6, 2-2) were able to push the ball deep and lock it in the Eastern zone until the end of the match.
[This was] hard fought battle tonight that showed our resiliency, especially in the last quarter," Head Coach
Abbey Kemble said after the match. "Playing the full 60 is something we have been talking about, and the team implemented that mentality. We are ready to use this momentum into Saturday."
The Eagles will host Stevens Institute of Technology in a non-league match-up of MAC member schools on Saturday. Eastern will honor seniors
Lily White and
Morgan Ruhl at that match.
