ANNVILLE, Pa. - Playing on the road at Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, second quarter scoring struggles, combined with a strong shooting night from the hosts, proved costly, as Eastern Women's Basketball (6-10, 3-5 MACC) dropped a 63-46 decision to the Flying Dutchmen inside of Sorrentino Gymnasium. For the Eagles, it was their second straight MAC Commonwealth defeat, and their eighth loss away from the NEST this season.
Lebanon Valley (8-9, 3-5 MACC) put together an efficient offensive performance, shooting a resounding 22-of-45 from the field (48.9 percent) and six-of-15 (40 percent) from beyond the arc. In three of the game's four quarters, the Flying Dutchmen knocked down 50 percent of their shot attempts, building a double-digit advantage they would not relinquish.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team leading by more than four points. Lebanon Valley built an early 8-5 lead at the 4:42 mark, but the Eagles responded with a 6-0 run over the following 3:08 to grab an 11-8 advantage.
Kayla Jefferson hit a pair of free throws to begin the run, before
Jaelyn Harris and
Taryn Woodson followed with a pair of layups.
The advantage was short-lived, as Lebanon Valley outscored the Eagles 19-7 in the second quarter to take a 29-18 lead at the halftime break. Eastern never got closer than eight points the rest of the way, unable to recover from its second quarter scoring drought.
The Eagles finished 19-of-58 from the floor (32.8 percent) and 1-of-12 from beyond the arc.
Mikayla Wright led Eastern with 12 points to go along with five rebounds, while Woodson collected her eighth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Harris added 10 points for the Eagles, and needs just two more triples to become the program's all-time leader in career three-pointers made.
The Eagles will be back on the road on Saturday, traveling to Grantham to take on Messiah (13-2, 7-1 MACC). Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
