LANCASTER, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey scored three goals in a three-minute burst in the first quarter and held on for a 5-0 win at Lancaster Bible College. The rare Friday night contest was set up as a start to LBC's homecoming weekend. The game had a homecoming feel for Eastern as well. Five current Eagles call Lancaster County home, and several more are from nearby counties.
The Eagles sustained pressure early, but did not find the cage until
Lily White slipped a low shot in after a dribbling dribbling run up the left side. White went to nearby Conestoga Valley High School.
Two minutes later,
Ellie Pruitt doubled lead. The sophomore forward was in the right place to clean up a rebound of a White shot from the top of the circle.
Seconds later Haley Ferry slammed home a third.
Morgan Ruhl set up the play with a steal in the offensive third. She drove a hard pass toward the top of the circle.
Maisie Dorwart, from nearby Manheim, collected the pass and carried it into the circle before slipping a pass past the charging goalie. Ferry converted into the yawning cage.
The Eagles (2-6) had a 13-0 edge in first-half shots.
Emerson Shauger made it 4-0 early in the second quarter. She tipped in a shot from close range after a pass from Lancaster native
JoEl Groff.
Maisie Dorwart scored the only goal of the second half. The junior forward ripped a shot from just inside the circle on the Eagles' second penalty corner of the half.
Jenna Lapp, from Willow Street, Pa., set up the shot after receiving the insert from Ruhl.
"We had good focus on moving the ball," Head Coach
Camrin Azzarano said after the game. "We really wanted to play a great team game. Our passing kept getting better as the game progressed."
Abby Agapito and
Kylie Troyer each played half in goal to secure the shutout. Troyer is also from Lancaster.
The Eagles will host No. 6 TCNJ on Thursday before returning to MAC Commonwealth action at Stevenson next weekend.
