ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Two goals in the final eight minutes turned out to be the difference as Eastern University Field Hockey dropped a tough 4-2 non-league decision to the visiting Elizabethtown College Blue Jays (3-4).
Jenna Lapp and
Morgan Ruhl each scored for the Eagles (1-6).
The Eagles nearly doubled the Blue Jays in penalty corners for the contest. Eastern looked dangerous on all the early corners but did not find the back of the cage until the third corner of the opening period.
Hailey Ferry fired the initial shot and
Jenna Lapp was in the right place to take the ball off the goalie's pads to put the Eagles up.
Less than a minute later, the Blue Jays equalized on a penalty stroke. Eastern held a 10-6 edge in first-half shots, but the game remained knotted at 1-1at the half.
After half, the Eastern team earned three quick corners and forced Etown goalie Angelina Giglio-Tos to make three stops. The third of those came on a jumping save of a legally lifted shot from
Maisie Dorwart that was going to slip just under the bar. The Blue Jays scored on a rebound on their first corner of the second half.
Abby Agapito made a pair of saves and
Lily White stopped another ball off the line, but the fourth chance from in close proved to be enough for a 2-1 lead.
Ruhl equalized int he 41st minute on yet another corner. The junior forward played the insert and made her way to the post where she tucked in a shot from Ferry from close range.
Eastern had a pair of great chances to take the lead in the match, but Ferry's pass on a 2-on-1 breakaway bounced over the stick of
Rebecca Webb and Lapp had a shot in the fourth slip just wide of the right post.
The Blue Jays found the game-winner on a scrum in front with seven minutes to play and added an insurance goal on a penalty corner in the final minute.
The Eagles are at Lancaster Bible for the Charger's Homecoming game on Friday night.
