READING, Pa.– In the program's first league match in the MAC Commonwealth, Eastern University Field Hockey faced a familiar foe. The Eagles (1-5, 0-1) dropped a 2-0 decision at Alvernia University.
It was the 33rd meeting between the two programs since 1991. Eastern and Alvernia have now played as league opponents in three different conferences. After tonight, Eastern holds an 18-15 edge in the series. The Golden Wolves scored once in the second and once in the fourth to earn the 2-0 win.
Alvernia had more of the play throughout.
Abby Agapito, though, kept the Eagles in it. The sophomore goalie finished the match with 18 stops as the Golden Wolves launched 26 total shots at goal.
Even with the hosts holding a heavy advantage in shots and field position, the Eagles earned a penalty corner in each period and were within striking distance for the entire contest. Alvernia's first goal came with just over three minutes remaining in the first half. The Golden Wolves earned an insurance goal three minutes into the fourth.
Grace Wise was credited with a defensive save in the loss. The Eagles look to rebound on Wednesday with a non-league home game against Elizabethtown College. That game is slated to start at 4:00 pm.
