ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Tennis swept the doubles matches and held on for an 8-1 MAC Commonwealth win over the visiting York College Spartans.
The Eagles set the tone with strong play at doubles. After spending the week working on poaching at the net, Ryan Kratz and Kenneth Samuel took advantage of their chances and put the Eagles up 1-0 with an 8-3 win at the second doubles spot.
Bryan Levi and Nick Wool had a stern test at the first doubles spot. The duo trailed 5-4 and were down 40-love with Levi at the service line. The Eagles scored five straight points to tie the match at 5-5. The two teams split the next four games to force a tiebreaker. The Spartans led 4-3 in the tiebreaker, but the Eagles scored the last four points to claim the important second doubles point.
Jacob Devage and Darren Lopez picked up the third doubles point with an 8-3 win.
Levi continued his solid play at the top singles spot with a 6-2, 6-3 win. Wool and Samuel cruised to wins at second and third singles. Devage had a battle at fourth singles. He won the first set, 6-2, but dropped the second set 6-3 to force a super-tiebreaker. He won that by a 10-6 margin.
Lopez picked up the final Eastern point with an 8-1 win at the final singles spot.
The Eagles (1-3, 1-2) are slated to play at Alvernia tomorrow and to wrap up the regular season at Messiah on Saturday. The MAC Commonwealth tournament starts on May 3. Eastern can secure a home match in the opening round with a win at Alvernia.
