Baseball Falls Short at Home Against Widener

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Baseball grabbed a 5-0 lead in the nightcap, but their attempt to salvage a split fell short when the visiting Widener University Pride plated three runs in the top of the eighth and held on for a 6-5 win.

In game two, Matt McHale hit a two-run home run down the left field line to drive in Shane Albertson in the bottom of the first. After Steve Sattanino pitched a second perfect inning in the second, the Eagles grabbed two more runs in the bottom half of the frame. Garrett Friend drove in Jeffrey Williams and Jason Hall came home on a safety squeeze from Albertson.

The Eastern lead grew to 5-0 when Liam Clarke and Brad Clemens hit back-to-back doubles in the third. The Eagles had chances to add on, but the Pride defense played well behind their pitching, and no more Eastern runners came home.

Widener grabbed two back in the top of the fourth on a home run down the right field line,a nd they tacked on a single run in the fifth on two hits off Sattanino.

Tyler Bennett came on in relief and threw a scoreless sixth and seventh, but the eighth became a problem. After retiring the first batter fo the inning, Bennett gave up a pair of hits and a pair of walks to let in a run. The first batter to face Mickey Foytik in relief doubled to right to put Widener up 6-5. Foytik struck out the next hitter and induced a ground ball to end the rally, but the lead was gone.

Two runners reached in the eigth for the Eagles, but the big hit did not come.

Widener won the opener 5-0 behind a 3-hit complete game from right-handed starter Dylan Peiffer. Henry Hutchinson allowed five runs on seven hitts. Dylan Hanni did not allow a hit in two innings of relief.

"We actually played well." Head Coach Scott Renauro said after the game. "We had good at bats and played solid in the field. Sometimes it is just not your day. They made some really nice plays on four or  of our barreled up baseballs in game one. Game two we had a good quality start from Steve. We just couldn't finish."

With rain in the forecast for tomorrow, the Eagles and Pride will meet again in Chester on Monday.
