RADNOR, Pa. - In its first game of the Cabrini Classic on Thursday afternoon, offensive struggles, particularly in the third quarter, proved costly as Eastern Women's Basketball suffered a 66-41 setback to Rowan. The Profs led by just four points at halftime, but outscored the Eagles 19-8 in the third period to assume control and take a double-digit advantage they would not relinquish.
The two teams battled closely throughout the first quarter with neither leading by more than three points.
Sara Haas scored six points in the frame on a pair of threes, while
Mikayla Wright scored five as Rowan took a 16-14 lead into the first quarter break.
Both teams struggled to score in the second quarter, combining for just 14 points. However, the contest remained within one possession until the halftime horn. The Eagles grabbed a 19-18 advantage on layups from Haas and
Taryn Woodson, but the Profs ended the first half on a 6-0 run, including a basket at the buzzer, to take a 24-20 lead into halftime.Â
The Profs took control in the third quarter, allowing only three Eastern field goals while knocking down five of their own as well as eight of nine attempts from the free-throw line. The Eagles continued to battle but were unable to draw closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
Eastern shot just 26.0 percent (13-of-50) from the field, including only three-of-27 (11.1 percent) from beyond the arc. Additionally, the Profs took advantage of the Eagles' miscues, scoring 29 points off turnovers.
Woodson put together a solid performance for Eastern, scoring 10 points and notching a career-high 18 rebounds for her third double-double in the Eagles' last four games. Haas finished the contest with 10 points, while Wright added eight points and a career-high 15 boards.
The Eagles will wrap up the Cabrini Classic on Friday afternoon against Rosemont. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 noon.
