Women's Basketball Wraps Up 2021 with Triumph over Rosemont

RADNOR, Pa. - Eastern Women's Basketball ended the 2021 portion of its schedule with a victory on New Years Eve, defeating the Rosemont Ravens 81-33 on the second day of the Cabrini University Classic. The 81 points were a season-high as four players finished in double figures for the Eagles in their third victory of the season.

Sophomore forward Mikayla Wright put together one of her finest performances to date in an Eagles' uniform, scoring a career-high 20 points on nine-of-18 shooting from the field to go along with nine rebounds and a pair of steals. The Harrisburg native has been one of the Eagles' most consistent scorers in the last month, notching her sixth double-digit scoring performance in Eastern's last seven contests.

Additionally, senior guard Brynn Schmidt also recorded a season-best showing, finishing with a career-best 16 points on five made field goals along with four rebounds. Schmidt was also a menace on defense, collecting a team-leading five steals.

First-year center Taryn Woodson continued her recent dominance on the glass, recording her fifth-straight double-digit rebound game and her third-straight double-double. The Harrisburg native recorded a career-best 16 points and 17 rebounds in Eastern's victory. Senior guard Jaelyn Harris rounded out Eastern's double-digit scorers, collecting 14 points on four three-pointers, while first-year guard Camila Sosa dished out a career-best 10 assists.

Rosemont scored the game's first points on its opening possession, but a layup from Wright and a three-pointer from Harris in the opening two-and-a-half minutes gave the Eagles a lead they would not relinquish. Schmidt scored eight of her 16 points in the opening quarter, giving Eastern a 18-10 lead.

The Eagles took control of the contest in the second quarter, outscoring the Ravens 20-8 while allowing just three made field goals. Woodson opened the period with a basket at the 8:55 mark, and the Eagles led by double-digits the rest of the way. Eastern continued to build its advantage, opening the second quarter on a 10-1 run to take a 28-13 lead at the 6:04 mark. Rosemont briefly cut the Eastern lead to 12 later in the frame, but a 10-2 surge for the Eagles, capped off by five straight points from Sara Haas, put the Eagles up 38-18 at the halftime break.

Eastern kept the pedal down in the second half, outscoring the Ravens 43-15 while knocking 18 of their 48 shot attempts. The Eagles built their advantage to as many as 50 points before securing the 48-point win. As a team, the Eagles finished 32-of-78 from the field (41 percent).

Defensively, the Eagles shut down the Rosemont offense all afternoon, holding the Ravens to just 23.2 percent shooting from the floor (13-of-56) while forcing 29 turnovers.

Eastern will be back home on Wednesday to kick off 2022 with a MAC Commonwealth showdown against Alvernia. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
