ARLINGTON, Va. - In the opener of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament, a sluggish start on both ends of the floor proved to be the difference as Eastern Women's Basketball fell to host Marymount University 81-69. The Eagles shot just three-of-15 from the floor while allowing the Saints to knock down nine of their 14 field goal attempts (64.2 percent), leading to a sizable deficit they were unable to recover from.
The Eagles struggled mightily on the offensive end in the opening 5:40, turning the ball over seven times before scoring their first basket. The Saint took full advantage, scoring the game's first 11 points to build a lead they would relinquish.
Jaelyn Harris finally broke the scoreless drought with a triple at the 4:10 mark of the first quarter, but the damage had already been done. Marymount quickly regained its double-digit advantage, taking a 24-8 lead into the first quarter break.
Eastern would trail by double-digits throughout the second and third quarters, with the Marymount lead growing to as many as 27 points. The Eagles trimmed the advantage to 11 with a 5-0 run to begin the second quarter, but the Saints answered with 11 straight points to regain control.
The Eagles outscored the Saints 28-13 in the fourth quarter, cutting their deficit to nine with 1:27 remaining to play, but their first quarter woes proved to much to overcome.
Harris put together a solid performance for the Eagles, scoring a team-high 18 points and knocking down four threes.
Ashya Gaddy scored 13 points to go along with nine rebounds and four assists, while first-year center
Taryn Woodson collected her first collegiate double-double with 11 points and 13 boards.
Sara Haas recorded a strong game off the bench, scoring a season-high 10 points on four-of-seven shooting from the floor and two-of-three from beyond the arc.
Eastern will conclude the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament tomorrow evening, facing off against either Catholic or Washington & Lee in the consolation game. Tip is set for 5:30 pm.
