ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - With Eastern Women's Soccer unbeaten streak at home in jeopardy, sophomore midfielder Cassie Avenick scored the game-tying tally in the 89th minute to secure a 1-1 draw with MAC Commonwealth foe Stevenson on Homecoming. It was the second time this season that the Eagles have netted a game-tying tally with less than two minutes remaining in a match at Olson Field.
Additionally, with the draw, Eastern improved to 5-0-2 on their home turf this season.
"I couldn't be more proud of this team's desire and courage," Eastern Head Coach AJ Stueck said. "They never give up, and the goal with a minute left truly shows this team's fighting spirit."
Stevenson controlled play in the first half, holding the advantage in both possession and field position. Additionally, the Mustangs outshot the Eagles by a 7-3 margin in the opening 45 minutes, creating several strong scoring chances. The Mustangs' relentless attack eventually resulted in their lone goal, which came in the 39th minute off the right foot of Samantha Wilson.
However, Eastern made the necessary adjustments at halftime and began to turn the tide in their favor. The Eagles outshot Stevenson 6-5 in the second half and finished with nine shots in the final three periods.
"At halftime we spoke about leaving it all out there," Stueck said. "The entire team really responded and gave it their all in the second half and overtime."
With 1:06 on the clock, Avenick made Eastern's second corner kick of the game count. From the near corner, the Bristol, Va. native lifted the ball into the upper right hand corner of the net for her second goal in Eastern's last three matches.
"Credit to Cassie for a brilliant set piece," Stueck said. "She has wonderful technique which was on display on that corner kick."
Madelyn Mullen led the Eagles with five shots, two of which were on frame, while Avenick, Lauryn Laning, and Gabi Hollinger each finished with two shots apiece. Emily Honig made three saves for the Eagles in the draw.
Eastern Women's Soccer will head to Annville on Tuesday afternoon for another MAC Commonwealth matchup against the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen. Kickoff is set for 4:00 pm.
"This was a very good week for us remaining undefeated at home," Stueck concluded. "We will look to use this momentum in a tough game on Tuesday."
