CHESTER, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey dropped a 4-1 decision at Widener University in the team's final MAC Commonwealth test of the year.
Harper Sellers scored the goal for the Eagles.
Though the host Pride (13-4, 5-3) had the majority of possession and field position early, the Eastern defense held its ground and the first quarter ended with no goals on the board. Both teams put one shot on goal in the first 15 minutes.
Though the Pride broke through with a goal in the 17th minute, the Eagles went to halftime down by a single goal.
The Eagles had back-to-back chances to level the score to start the second half.
Jenna Lapp redirected a shot after a
Morgan Ruhl penalty corner and the Eagles earned a second penalty corner. A Widener foul just outside the circle set up a drive up the baseline by Ruhl. She worked her way toward the goal and twice tried to jam the ball past the onrushing goalie.
Seconds later, the Pride nearly answered in transition, but a cross from the right side went off a Widener player's foot before she banged a shot off the backboard.
As the second half progressed, the Eagles picked up a trio of green cards. The defense stood tall through a two-player-down situation for nearly two full minutes, but the extra exertion took its toll. With the clock winding down and the Eagles short-handed again, the Pride earned the circle. The Eastern defense broke up the play twice but could not clear the loose ball. Widener's Erin Callahan put away a shot with less than a second on the clock.
Eastern opened the fourth quarter with another penalty corner, but the momentum of the game had switched and the Pride capitalized. Widener popped in two more goals in a two minute stretch to build a 4-0 lead.
The Eagles (3-14, 1-7) finally broke through on a penalty corner goal. Sellers took the insert and got the ball back from
Maisie Dorwart to the goalie's right. Sellers pushed a dribble back up field and beat the goalie with a low shot for her first tally of the year.
The Eagles will wrap up the 2021 season with a home game against Arcadia on Saturday. The program will honor Sellers and fellow seniors Lindsey Estep and
Jenna Lapp before the 11:00 am game.
