ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey was unable to solve a stingy York College defense and dropped a 3-0 decision in the final home MAC Commonwealth game of the season.
Abby Agapito finished with nine saves in goal for the Eagles.
The visiting Spartans (13-3, 6-1) entered the match in the second spot in the MAC Commonwealth standings and riding a four-match winning streak. They had allowed only seven goals in their 12 wins and had not conceded more than a single tally in any of those contests.
Though the teams each had opportunities in the opening frame, it was the visitors who capitalized. Eastern had a 3-2 edge in penalty corners, but the Spartans put away their first of the day on a beautiful redirect at the back post by Riley Buschert in the sixth minute.
The Eagles had a trio of chances to equalize on penalty corners, but York goalie Kaitlyn Wallace stuffed a
Lily White attempt from in close on the first,
Morgan Ruhl was unable to get a redirect on her wide shot on the second, and
Jenna Lapp had a tip go wide on the third.
The Spartans doubled their lead on a transition goal in the 29th minute. The half ended with the Eagles in the York circle and threatening.
Harper Sellers put a low shot on goal that Wallace turned away, and the clock expired before the Eagles could get a rebound shot on frame.
Neither team found the goal in an evenly played second quarter. York put only one shot on goal and had just a single penalty corner in the frame.
Eastern had a tremendous chance to halve the deficit early in the third.
Hailey Ferry ripped a cross into the circle that
Emerson Shauger met with perfect timing. Wallace read the play well and turned away the first-time shot.
Moments later, the Spartans found their insurance goal. Maggie Spadafora gathered a rebound of her own shot and lift a reverse-stick effort into the top corner.
The Eagles (3-13, 1-6) wrap up MAC Commonwealth play at Widener on Wednesday and will finish the year with a non-league home test against Arcadia next Saturday.
