ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Eastern University Field Hockey dropped a tough 2-0 decision in an evenly matched contest to the visiting Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen. Lebanon Valley scored twice in a 65 second stretch in the second quarter to earn the win.
Both sides had three penalty corners and four shots in the opening period. The Eagles (3-12, 1-5) had their best chance of the period on a corner midway through.
Hailey Ferry had her initial shot blocked, but
Lindsay Estep followed the effort and pushed a hard pass to the back post.
Ellie Pruitt put a redirecting touch on the effort, but it slipped wide.
The Dutchmen (8-8, 4-2) had a great chance in the opening seconds of the second quarter, but the Eagles matched that with a transition chance from Ferry at the other end. Maisey Dorwart set up the chance with a long pass from deep, and Ferry beat a defender on the turn. LVC goalie Corinne Kearney read the play well and came sliding out with her pads stacked high. Ferry was unable to lift the shot over her legs and the match remained level.
The Dutchmen broke through in the 25th minute. Abbie Keath fired a shot from in close.
Abby Agapito stopped the initial shot, but Keath won the race to the rebound and guided it home. LVC doubled the lead in the 26th minute. Keath received a cross from the right side and turned on it for her fourth goal of the season.
Eastern had another chance late in the quarter, but Kearney stopped a shot from
Lily White and
Morgan Ruhl had her follow-up chance blocked.
The second half stayed mostly in the middle of the field. The Eagles earned a pair of fourth-quarter corners but could not get the final strike to halve the lead.
White finished the game with a pair of defensive saves. Agapito made five stops.
The Eagles host York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday at 11:00 am.
