OWINGS MILLS, Md.– In the first meeting between the two programs, Eastern University Field Hockey dropped a 3-1 decision at Stevenson University. The host Mustangs (4-5, 1-1) scored twice in the final 20 minutes to break a 1-1 tie and secure a MAC Commonwealth win.
Kylie Troyer made 10 stops in goal for the Eagles.
While the field dimensions are the same, the first time on the playing surface in front of the massive bleachers and press box at Mustang Stadium can leave an impression. The Eagles, however, were not intimidated. Though the Mustangs had an advantage in first quarter shots, they did not get on the board until the final seconds of the opening quarter.
Maisie Dorwart answered with her second goal of the year on an Eastern penalty corner in the 19th minute. The junior midfielder popped in a rebound after her initial shot was stopped. The Eagles had four penalty corners in the first half.
Eastern had chances to take the lead with three penalty corners in the third quarter, but goalie Jamie Fritz and the Stevenson defense kept the game level at 1-1.
Stevenson found what would be the game-winner on a penalty corner in the 41st minute. They added an insurance goal halfway through the final quarter.
Eastern is at Stevens Institute of Technology for a non-league test on Wednesday before hosting Hood College on Homecoming.
Homecoming will be a big weekend for Eastern Field Hockey. In addition to a MAC Commonwealth game at 11 on Saturday, Leslie Messick '10 is entering the Hall of Honor on Friday evening in the class of 2020, and the 2010 Field Hockey team that finished 20-3 and reached the Elite 8 will be inducted into the Hall of Honor on Sunday afternoon as part of the Class of 2021.
